Herbs & Salads...
Many high value intensively farmed crops such as herbs and leaf crops face many of the same legislative pressures as glasshouse growers. The removal of pesticides due to lack of supporting data to prove efficacy on none mainstream crops and increasing vigilance on residues has forced growers to look to LPG burners.
Growers of many herb varieities burn the beds after they have harvested this process removes any disease, such as rust, weeds and debris so the crop grows from its established roots into a disease and weed free environment.
High value row crop growers have also taken to inter row burning as an alternative to inter row cultivation or band spraying.
For specialist salad growers with intensive cropping programmes post harvest burning destroys crop debris and removes any disease or weeds that may be present. This allows the growers to reduce the down time in between harvest and planting as well as reducing weed and disease pressure on the new crop.
